Major Sins in Islam – Friday 14 Aug 2015

Join on Friday 14 August 2015 between 2.30pm and Maghrib to learn about Major Sins in Islam, special duroos delivered by Islamic University Graduates: Abdul Wahid Stephenson and Abu Hanifah.

This Manzumah (Scholarly Poem) written by al ‘Allamah Musa bin Aḥmad bin Musa al Ḥajawi, gathers within it the guideline of what is considered a major sin in Islam as well as the mention of around 70 major sins of varying severity. May Allah reward the compiler of the poem and protect us all from falling into the major sins or persisting upon minor sins, ameen.

مَنْظُوْمَةُ الكَبَائِر

Poem of Major Sins

للعَلامَة مُوسَى بن أَحْمَدَ بنِ مُوسَى الحَجَّاوِي

Written by al ‘Allāmah Mūsā bin Aḥmad bin Mūsā al Ḥajāwī (d. 968 h.) رحمه الله تعالى

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

بِحَمْدِكَ ذِي الإِكْرَامِ مَا دُمْتُ أَبْتَدِي           كَثِيرًا كَمَا تَرْضَى بِغَيْرِ تَحَدُّدِ
((I)) I praise you as often as I begin something, Oh Possessor of Honoring Reward

A praise that is abundant, to the degree you are pleased with without any limit

وَصَلِّ عَلَى خَيْرِ الأَنَامِ وَآلِهِ         وَأَصْحَابِهِ مِنْ كُلِّ هَادٍ وَمُهْتَدِي
((II)) Send blessings upon the best of creation as well as his family

And his followers, every guide and pursuer of guidance

وَكُنْ عَالِـمًا أَنَّ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعَهَا         بِـ(كُبْرَى) وَ(صُغْرَى) قُسِّمَتْ فِي الْمُجَوَّدِ
((III)) Be knowledgeable that certainly all sins are categorized within the Qurān into MAJOR and MINOR

فَمَا فِيهِ حَدٌّ فِي الدُّنَا أَوْ تَوَعُّدٌ         بِأُخْرَى فَسِمْ كُبْرَى عَلَى نَصِّ أَحْمَدِ
((IV)) Whatever entails a corporal punishment in this world or a threat of punishment

in the hereafter, then term that a major sin according to what is textually reported from Aḥmad (bin Ḥanbal)

وَزَادَ حَفِيدُ المَجْدِ: أَو جَا          وَعِيدُه بِنَفْيٍ لإِيمَانٍ وَلَعْنٍ مُبَعِّدِ

((V)) The grandson of Majd (i.e. Shaykh al Islām Ibn Taymīyah) added that also is the case when there is a threat of

negation of faith or a curse that distances a person from mercy

كَشِـرْكٍ وَقَتْلِ النَّفْسِ إِلَّا بِحَقِّهَا         وَأَكْلِ  الرِّبَا وَالسِّحْرِ مَعْ قَذْفِ نُهَّدِ

((VI)) Such as 1.) Shirk, 2.) Murdering a Soul unless by a right

3.) Devouring Usury 4.) Sorcery and 5.) Slandering an innocent person

وَأَكْلِكَ أَمْوَالَ اليَتَامَى بِبَاطِلٍ         تَوَلِّيكَ يَوْمَ الزَّحْفِ فِي حَرْبِ جُحَّدِ
((VII)) 6.) Likewise is your devouring an orphans wealth in falsehood

7.) Fleeing from battle during the peak of conflict

كَذَاكَ الزِّنَى ثُمَّ اللِّوَاطُ وَشُرْبُهُم         خُمُورًا وَقَطْعٌ لِلطَّرِيقِ المُمَهَّدِ
((VIII)) 8.) Likewise is adultery 9.) then homosexuality and 10.) drinking

alcohol and 11.) highway robbery

وَسَرْقَةُ مَالِ الغَيْرِ أَو أَكْلُ مَالِهِ         بِبَاطِلِ صُنْعِ القَولِ وَالفِعْلِ وَاليَدِ
((IX)) 12.) Stealing the property of another or 13.) devouring his wealth

In falsehood by the contrivance of speech, action or physical force

شَهَادَةُ زُورٍ ثُمَّ عَقٌّ لِوَالِدٍ         وَغِيبَةُ مُغْتَابٍ نَمِيمَةُ مُفْسِدِ
((X)) 14.) False testimony, then 15.) disrespect of a parent

16.) Backbiting, and 17.) tale carrying by one with evil intent

يَمِينٌ غَمُوسٌ تَارِكٌ لِصَلَاتِهِ         مُصَلٍّ بِلَا طُهْرٍ لَهُ بِتَعَمُّدِ
((XI)) 18.) lying in an oath to cheat another, 19.) abandoning prayer

20.) Intentionally praying without purification

مُصَلٍّ بِغَيْرِ الوَقْتِ أَو غَيرِ         قِبْلَةٍ مُصَلٍّ بِلَا قُرْآنِهِ الْمُتَأَكِّدِ
((XII)) 21.) Praying without it being the time, or 22.) towards other than the Qiblah or 23.) definitely without reciting Qurān

قُنُوطُ الفَتَى مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللهِ ثُمَّ قُلْ     إِسَاءَةُ ظَنٍّ بِالإِلَهِ المُوَحَّدِ
((XIII)) Also 24.) A man desparing of Allah’s mercy then say:

25.) Having ill thoughts of Allah -the true deity to be singled out in worship

وَأَمْنٌ لِمَكْرِ اللهِ ثُمَّ قَطِيعَةٌ         لِذِي رَحِمٍ وَالكِبْرَ وَالخُيَلَا اعْدُدِ
((XIV)) 26.) Also feeling safe from Allah’s plan (to punish the deserving) and 27.) then severing

The ties of the womb, 28.) as well as arrogance and pridefulness, so count these.

كَذَا كَذِبٌ إِنْ كَانَ يَرْمِي بِفِتْنَةٍ         أَوِ المُفْتَرِي عَمدًا عَلى المُصْطَفَى  احْمَدِ
((XV)) 29.) Likewise is the case with lying when it cast someone into tribulation

30.) Or the one who intentionally fabricates against Aḥmad the chosen one.

قِيَادَةُ دَيُّوثٌ نِكَاحُ المُحَلِّلِ         وَهِجْرَةُ عَدْلٍ مُسْلِمٍ وَمُوَحِّدِ
((XVI)) 31.) Pimping 32.) a Dayyūth (allows his womanfolk to commit lewd acts), 33.) marrying someone to make them ḥalāl (for previous husband)

34.) Wrongfully boycotting an upright muslim monotheist

وَتَرْكٌ لِـحَجٍّ مُسْتَطِيعًا وَ مَنْعُهُ         زَكَاةً وَ حُكْمُ الَحاكِمِ المُتَقَلِّدِ

((XVII)) 35.)Not making Ḥajj while able, 36.) withholding

Payment of zakah 37.) as well as the ruling of judge determined

بِخُلْفٍ لِـحَقٍ وَ ارْتِشَاءٌ وَفِطْرُهُ         بِلَا عُذْرِنَا فِي صَوْمِ شَهْرِ التَّعَبُّدِ

((XVIII)) to oppose the truth and 38.) engage in bribery 39.) as well as breaking

one’s fast in the month of worship (Ramaḍān) without excuse

وَقَوْلٌ بِلَا عِلْمٍ عَلى دِينِ رَبِّنَا         وَسَبٌّ لِأَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ مُحَمَّدِ
((XIX)) 40.) Speaking about the religion of our Lord without knowledge

41.) Reviling the Ṣaḥābah of the Prophet Muḥammad

مُصِـرٌّ عَلَى العِصْيَانِ تَرْكُ تَنَزُّهٍ         مِنَ البَوْلِ فِي نَصِّ الحَدِيثِ الـمُسَدَّدِ

((XX)) 42.) Persisting upon disobedience, 43.) Not shielding oneself

From urine as is explicitly in the text of the ḥadīth

وَإِتْيَانُ مَنْ حَاضَتْ بِفَرْجٍ وَنَشْزُهَا         عَلَى زَوْجِهَا مِن غَيْرِ عُذْرٍ مُـمَهَّدِ

((XXI)) 44.) Intercourse with a menstruating woman, 45.) A woman being disobedient to her husband without a valid prior excuse

وَإِلْحَاقُهَا بِالزَّوْجِ مَنْ حَمَلَتْهُ مِنْ         سِوَاهُ وَكِتْمَانُ العُلُومِ لِـمُهْتَدِ
((XXII)) 46.) Falsely attributing another’s child to her husband

47.) Concealing knowledge from one pursuing guidance

وَتَصْوِيرُ ذِي رُوحٍ وَإِتْيَانُ كَاهِنٍ        وَإِتْيَانُ عَرَّافٍ وَتَصْدِيقُهُم زِدِ

((XXIII)) 48.) Making images of things with souls, 49.) going to the astrologer and

the fortune teller, 50.) believing them is something additional

سُجُودٌ لِغَيرِ اللهِ دَعْوَةُ مَنْ دَعَا         إِلَى بِدْعَةٍ أَو لِلضَّلَالَةِ مَا هُدِي
((XXIV)) 51.) Prostrating to other than Allāh, 52.) the call of one inviting

without guidance to innovation or misguidance

غُلُولٌ وَنَوْحٌ وَالتَّطَيُّرُ بَعْدَهُ         وَأَكْلٌ وَشُرْبٌ فِي لُـجَيْنٍ وَعَسْجَدِ
((XXV)) 53.) Wrongful appropriation of war spoils, 54.) Wailing (for the deceased) and after that is 55.) believing in evil omens or 56.) eating and drinking in gold or silver vessels

وَجَوْرُ المُوَصِّي فِي الوَصَايَا وَمَنْعُهُ        لِـمِيرَاثِ وَرَّاثٍ إِبَاقٌ لِأَعْبُدِ
((XXVI)) 57.) Oppression in one’s final will and 58.) preventing

inheritance from inheritors, 59.) The runaway slave

وَإِتْيَانُهَا فِي الدُّبْرِ بَيْعٌ لِـحُرَّةٍ          وَمَن يَسْتَحِلُّ البَيْتَ قِبْلَةَ مَسْجِدِ
((XXVII)) 60.) Anal intercourse with one’s woman, 61.) selling free-men into slavery

62.) desecrating the house (the K’abah) which is the Qiblah of any masjid

وَمِنْهَا اكْتِتَابٌ لِلرِّبَا وَشَهَادَةٌ       عَلَيْهِ وَذُو الوَجْهَيْنِ قُلْ لِلتَّوَعُّدِ

((XXVIII)) 63.) Contracting Usury and 64.) being a witness for it

65.) The two faced person. Say this in order to warn

وَمَنْ يَدَّعِي أَصْلًا وَلَيْسَ بِأَصْلِهِ         يَقُولُ: أَنَا ابْنُ الفَاضِلِ الـمُتَمَجِّدِ
((XXIX)) 66.) Claiming a false lineage, saying I am the descendent of a virtuous, glorified person

فَيَرْغَبُ عَنْ آبَائِهِ وَجُدُودِهِ         وَلَاسِيَّمَا إِنْ يَنْتَسِبْ لِـمُحَمَّدِ

((XXX))So that he forsakes his ancestors and forefathers, 67.) this is especially sinful if wrongly ascribing lineage to the Prophet Muḥammad

وَغِشُّ إِمَامٍ لِلرَّعِيَّةِ بَعْدَهُ         وُقُوعٌ عَلَى العَجْمَا البَهِيمَةِ سُفَّدِ

((XXXI)) 68.) The ruler betraying his subjects and then, 69.) bestiality

وَتَرْكٌ لِتَجْمِيعٍ إِسَاءَةُ مَالِكٍ         إِلى القِنِّ ذَا طَبْعٌ لَهُ فِي الْـمُعَبَّدِ
((XXXII)) 70.) not attending Jumu’ah without valid excuse, 71.) A master mistreating slaves
